Langtang Valley, Rebuilt: A Decade of Recovery

The 2015 Gorkha earthquake devastated many parts of Nepal, but few places were hit as catastrophically as Langtang. A massive earthquake-triggered landslide buried the village of Langtang, one of the valley’s main settlements, with a terrible loss of life. Nearly a decade on, the valley — and its trekking route — has come back, and the story of that recovery is now part of what you walk through.

A close, accessible valley

Langtang is one of the trekking regions nearest to Kathmandu, reached by road to Syabrubesi and then a walk up through forest and yak pasture toward the high settlement of Kyanjin Gompa, beneath the peak of Langtang Lirung. That accessibility, and the valley’s beauty, made it a popular route before the earthquake — and a devastating place for a disaster to strike at the height of the trekking season.

Most standard policies don’t cover high-altitude trekking or helicopter evacuation. Choose cover that does before you leave for the mountains.

Rebuilding

The community rebuilt, in many cases on safer ground near the old site, with new lodges and a restored trail. Trekking has resumed and the route is once again well-trodden, but lodge owners are candid that visitor numbers have taken years to recover and, by some accounts, still sit below pre-2015 levels. Choosing to trek Langtang is, in a small but real way, a contribution to that recovery.

Walking it now

  • The classic trek runs several days up to Kyanjin Gompa, with day hikes to viewpoints such as Kyanjin Ri and Tserko Ri for high mountain views.
  • It is comparatively short and accessible, making it a strong choice for trekkers with limited time.
  • Standard permits apply (Langtang National Park entry and a TIMS card); check current requirements before you go.

To walk Langtang today is to move through a place that lived through the worst and rebuilt — a landscape that is spectacular on its own terms and quietly moving for what it has recovered from.
