Chitwan National Park, in Nepal’s subtropical lowland Terai, is the country’s best-known wildlife destination — home to greater one-horned rhinoceros, Bengal tigers, gharial crocodiles, deer and a spectacular birdlife. Its official high season runs the cooler, drier months. But there is a case, if you are flexible, for going against the calendar.
The high-season default
The mainstream window is roughly October to March, when the weather is comfortable and the grass, after the monsoon, has been cut or grazed down enough to improve visibility. It is the reliable choice, and the busiest.

The off-season case
- Fewer visitors. The shoulder and warmer months bring quieter lodges and trails, and a more relaxed experience.
- Lower prices. Accommodation and packages are often noticeably cheaper outside peak.
- Sightings hold up. Guides report that core wildlife — rhino, deer — is still very findable outside high season, particularly around water in the hotter months.
The trade-offs to weigh
Off-season is not free of downsides. The pre-monsoon months can be genuinely hot and humid. During and just after the monsoon, tall grass reduces visibility and heavy rain can flood areas and limit access; some activities may be curtailed. The honest summary from guides is that the best month depends on what you want — peak comfort and easy viewing, or fewer people and lower cost with a little more unpredictability.
Beyond the wildlife
Chitwan is also the heartland of the Tharu, the indigenous people of the Terai, and a visit is richer for engaging with Tharu culture, food and village life alongside the safari itself — something that is just as rewarding in the quiet season as in the busy one.
